Precision Equipment, Not Grinders

We don't use belts or shortcuts. ShearGenius uses custom-built precision sharpening machines that restore edges cleaner, longer-lasting, and smoother than factory.

We Come to Your Salon

Our mobile workshop comes to you while you work — no postage, no drop-offs, no lost time. Your scissors are sharpened and back in your hands the same visit.

Every Pair Assessed Individually

Whether it's a precision detailer, a texturiser, or a set of barber shears — we assess every pair on its own terms and restore it to its optimal performance.

All Brands Welcome

Not just ShearGenius scissors. If you have a pair worth saving, we'll sharpen it. And if it's beyond restoration, we'll tell you straight — no charge for work that won't deliver. Same when they only need a clean and oil — we'll say so and hand them back, rather than take $80 for a sharpen you don't need.

When your scissors don’t need sharpening

Scissors that fold or push hair are often out of tension, not worn out — check the tension before you book a sharpen. Most stylists actually sharpen too late, not too often: the time to book is on a schedule, not when it’s already folding hair. When we look at yours, we’ll tell you which it is — and if it’s a clean, an oil and a tension set, that’s all you’ll hear about.

And when a sharpen turns into “these have never actually suited you” — that conversation is free too: the ShearGenius Fitting starts with a look at your scissors.

Book the van

Two ways, both easy. Call or text Bec on 0487 391 647 with where you are and how many pairs — she’ll slot you into the next run through your area. Or book online and we’ll confirm by text.

We cover 180+ towns across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia on regular runs — and if the van doesn’t reach you, sharpening covers every postcode in Australia.

Scissor Sharpening for Barbers

Barbers have specific needs — scissor-over-comb work, higher daily cut volumes, and heavier-use blades require more frequent sharpening and correct tension for precision control. We service barber shops across all our territories with the same mobile visit format. Read more about our barber scissor sharpening service.

What's Included in Every Sharpening Service

  • Full inspection. Edge geometry, blade ride, tension, screw condition, pivot wear and finger-rest alignment.
  • Convex-wheel sharpening. Both blades reground to the original factory convex profile.
  • Tension adjustment. Reset to manufacturer spec for that scissor weight and length.
  • Blade ride correction. The single biggest cause of "sharp but pushing" — the contact line where the two blades meet is reset by hand.
  • Ultrasonic clean. Removes hair, product, salt and oil from the pivot.
  • Lubrication. Premium scissor oil at the pivot.
  • Test cut. Every scissor is tested on hair before it leaves the bench.
  • Returned in case.

The Sharpening Process Step-by-Step

  1. Inspect blade geometry, tension and screw under magnification.
  2. Disassemble pivot and remove any worn washers.
  3. Hand-grind both edges on convex wheel, matching original factory angle.
  4. Hone with finer wheel for the polished convex finish.
  5. Repair any nicks or chips along the cutting edge.
  6. Reset blade ride — the hand-rubbed contact face that controls blade-to-blade pressure.
  7. Ultrasonic clean, dry, oil and reassemble with correct tension.
  8. Final test cut on hair, then case and return.

Types of Scissors We Sharpen

We sharpen professional hairdressing and barber scissors only. Every service is specialised for the hairdressing and barbering trade — we do not sharpen vet, dog grooming, kitchen, tailoring or medical scissors.

  • Hairdressing convex shears — Japanese hollow-ground edges, the workhorse of every salon.
  • Bevelled hairdressing scissors — older European-style edges, often German.
  • Barber scissors — longer, heavier, ground for dry cutting and beard work.
  • Thinning and texturising scissors — single-side teeth, requires individual tooth honing.
  • Left-handed hairdressing and barber scissors — ground with the bevels in the opposite orientation to preserve true left-hand geometry.

How Often Should You Sharpen?

User Cutting Volume Recommended Frequency
High-volume cutting 15-25 cuts per day Every 4-6 months
Barber (clipper-over-comb) 20-40 cuts per day Every 3-5 months
Lower-volume days 5-10 cuts per day Every 6-9 months
Mobile / freelance stylist 10-20 cuts per day Every 6 months

See our full sharpening frequency guide.

Sharpening vs Replacing

A premium Japanese scissor is designed to be sharpened many times across its life. If your scissor cost more than $200 new, sharpen it. If it cost less than $80 and the steel is soft, replace it. See our when to replace vs sharpen guide.

Checked Before It Goes Back

Every sharpen is checked at the bench before it goes back — edge geometry, blade ride and tension. If the edge doesn't feel right once you've cut with it, call 0487 391 647 and talk it through with the person who did the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does scissor sharpening cost in Australia?

ShearGenius uses flat pricing: $70 per pair for ShearGenius brand scissors and $80 per pair for all other brands. No hidden fees, same-day turnaround for mobile service.

How long does scissor sharpening take?

A single scissor takes 15-25 minutes on the bench. On a mobile job we usually sharpen between clients with no salon downtime.

Can you sharpen convex scissors?

Yes — convex scissors are our specialty. We use dedicated convex wheels, not flat grinders.

Do you sharpen barber scissors?

Yes. Barber scissors get a slightly more robust edge angle to handle dry cutting, beard work and longer blade lengths.

What is scissor sharpening?

You post your scissors to our workshop, we sharpen them within promptly after arrival, and we post them back insured. Total door-to-door turnaround is 3-5 business days for capital cities. See our sharpening page.

Do you fix nicks and chips?

Yes. Most small nicks are repaired during a standard sharpening at no extra charge.

How often should I sharpen my scissors?

A full-time stylist should sharpen every 4-6 months. Barbers usually need every 3-5 months.

Can I sharpen my own scissors?

For a premium convex scissor, no. Convex sharpening requires specialised wheels, the right grit progression, and the ability to set blade ride by hand.

Do you sharpen left-handed scissors?

Yes. True left-handed scissors have reversed blade geometry and need to be ground with the bevels in the opposite orientation.

Will sharpening void my scissor warranty?

Professional sharpening by a qualified convex sharpener does not void any reputable manufacturer's warranty.

Outside the scissor side of the business, Matt also runs findme.hair's mobile-hairdresser directory — Australia's free, hand-verified salon and barber directory, where many of the salons we sharpen for are listed. If you're a stylist looking for a workplace, or a client looking for a mobile hairdresser in your area, the directory covers every state and territory at zero cost.

Precision Restoration. On-Site.

Most travelling sharpeners run a belt grinder over your scissors and hand them back. We don't. Every pair is assessed individually, taken to a precision wheel set up specifically for hairdressing scissors, and tensioned by hand before it goes back into your kit.

Convex restoration. Individually tensioned edge. No batch passes. No flat-bed grinders.
