Try Scissors Before You Buy — Cut With It at Your Own Chair
While Matt sharpens your scissors at your salon, you can take any scissor off the demo board and cut with it — for real, on your own clients, in your own chair. If it suits your hand, buy it on the spot or think it over. No importer or online store can offer that, because none of them are standing in your salon.
That's the whole idea. You wouldn't buy a car without driving it. A scissor lives in your hand for years — you should feel it cut before you pay for it.
How it works
- Book the van. Matt and Aaron run regular sharpening routes across Victoria and Tasmania, plus Mount Gambier and Millicent. Book a sharpen or call Bec on 0487 391 647.
- While your pair is on the bench, pick from the board. The demo board rides in the van with working scissors from the range. Pick whatever catches your eye — or whatever Matt suggests after reading the wear on your old pair.
- Cut a real section. Your salon, your light, your client's hair. Feel the balance, the glide, the close. That tells you more in thirty seconds than any product page can.
There's no obligation and no pitch. Hand the scissor back and get on with your day if it's not the one — the sharpen you booked is the job. But if the scissor disappears in your hand, you'll know.
Why this answers the question everyone asks
The single most common worry we hear about buying scissors online: "How do I know it suits my hand if I can't try it?" Fair question. A scissor is personal — finger length, posture, cutting style. The demo board is our answer: if you're anywhere on our runs, you never have to buy blind. Try it during your sharpen, on hair that's actually attached to a person.
After more than 100,000 scissors sharpened and 40,000+ sold since 2007, we've never seen a substitute for cutting with the thing before you buy it.
Not on our routes?
The van covers Victoria and Tasmania, plus Mount Gambier and Millicent — see the service areas. If you're outside that, you're not buying blind either:
- The ShearGenius Fitting — free. Tell us how you cut and Matt matches the scissor to you before you spend a dollar. Or just pick up the phone.
- Scissors ship Australia-wide, free.
- Changed your mind? Contact us within 30 days and return the scissors unused, subject to our Refund Policy.
- Every scissor carries our Lifetime Manufacturing Warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Can I try ShearGenius scissors before I buy them?
Yes — if you're on our sharpening runs. While Matt sharpens your scissors at your salon, you can cut with any scissor from the demo board on your own clients. Outside the routes, the free ShearGenius Fitting matches the scissor to your hand before you buy.
Does trying a scissor cost anything?
No. It happens while your sharpen is on the bench — the sharpen is the only bill (currently $70 for ShearGenius scissors, $80 for other brands).
Is there any obligation to buy?
None. The sharpen you booked is the job. The demo board is there if you're curious — have a cut with something new while you wait, and hand it back if it's not for you.
What scissors are on the demo board?
Working scissors from the ShearGenius range. Exactly which models are on the van varies by run — if you want to try a specific model, call Bec on 0487 391 647 before your visit and she'll make sure it's aboard.
Where does the demo board travel?
Everywhere the sharpening van goes: regular runs across Victoria and Tasmania, plus Mount Gambier and Millicent.
Can apprentices try scissors too?
Absolutely. If the van's at your salon, everyone on the floor is welcome to cut with the board — apprentices included. It's the best way to learn what a properly balanced scissor feels like.
