Matt Grumley
The technical engine of ShearGenius. A hairdresser since 1990, scissor designer, and sharpener of 100,000+ scissors. Every scissor we sell passes through Matt's hands before it ships.
“I don’t sell scissors. I make the tool I wish I’d had behind the chair.”
Matt has been in the hair industry since 1990 — a hairdresser and educator who became a scissorsmith and designer. He doesn’t just sell the product; he makes and hand-finishes it. Every pair that leaves the workshop has been under his loupe: pivot tension, edge geometry, tip alignment. No batch passes on trust.
Every other brand in this category is a marketer reselling someone else’s steel. ShearGenius is the exception.
Matt has cut hair since 1990. Aaron since 1987 — a Master Hairdresser, barber and former salon owner, and the face of ShearGenius on the road. Together that’s more than seventy-five years in the industry, and it’s why the advice you get is real.
The scissors are forged in Japan, then hand-finished at Matt’s bench in Lake Wendouree, Victoria — tensioned, edged and set by hand before they’re inspected and sold direct. No distributor markup. No middleman. No call centre. Just the people who make the tool, standing behind it.
Three stages. None of them skipped.
Premium Japanese steel, forged by our long-standing partner factories overseas. The raw article arrives — nothing more. The character is still ahead of it.
At Matt’s bench in Victoria, each pair is tensioned, the edge geometry set, the convex honed and the tips aligned — by hand. This is where a blank becomes a ShearGenius.
Every pair goes under the loupe before it ships — pivot, edge, alignment. No batch passes on trust. Then it goes straight to you at supplier-level pricing, with no middleman in between.
Matt and Aaron lead from the front — at the bench in Lake Wendouree, on the road, in the salons. Behind them, a national operation. The studio team running sharpening, dispatch and customer care. Long-standing forging partners overseas supplying the steel article. The on-road sharpening division across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. The two faces you deal with. The full operation behind them. No outsourcing of judgement. No call centres. No middlemen.

The face of ShearGenius in salons. A Master Hairdresser and barber since 1987 and former salon owner. When ShearGenius visits, you're dealing with a master who cuts for a living and helps stylists choose scissors that genuinely suit how they cut.
The operational engine room. Custom precision sharpening machines, not belts. Every customer-supplied scissor passes through Matt's standard. Orders packed and dispatched same-day. Customer care fielded by humans who actually work in the studio — not a contracted call centre.
Our forging partners overseas have been supplying ShearGenius steel for years — not a one-off supplier deal, an actively-managed relationship Matt visits and audits. The steel article arrives forged. Hand-finishing happens at the bench in Lake Wendouree. Every batch is inspected before any pair leaves Australia.
Precision is a choice. Professionalism is a habit. ShearGenius is your partner.
Words from the people holding them.
“Unparalleled sharpness achieved on my scissors, thanks to ShearGenius. I sent in three pairs that other sharpeners had struggled with, and every single one came back cutting like new. Matt clearly knows his steel better than anyone else in the business.”
“The Jada scissors I bought from him have been amazing. Thank you for not sharpening my scissors one more time and convincing me I needed a new pair.”
“I have been cutting for 12 years and these are the best scissors I have owned at any price point.”
