For Hairdressing and Barbering Schools

Every apprentice is handed a kit on day one, and the scissors in it decide what they learn about cutting. We make ours. If you teach hairdressing or barbering, that is worth a conversation.

Who you would actually be dealing with

Matt Grumley has been behind the chair since 1990 and has run ShearGenius since 2007. He is an Australian scissorsmith. The steel is forged by specialist partner factories in Japan; Matt hand-finishes and tensions the scissors at his bench in Lake Wendouree, and inspects every one before it ships. He has sharpened well over one hundred thousand pairs.

That matters in a classroom in a way it does not in a salon. A supplier can tell your students a scissor is well made. Matt can put a worn edge under magnification and show thirty apprentices exactly what a rolled edge looks like, why it happened, and what the student did at the chair to cause it. That is a lesson, not a sales pitch — and it is not something a reseller can deliver at any price.

The apprentice range

Young Genius is our entry range. It is a genuine professional tool built to a student price, not a toy. Published retail prices:

  • Scissor and thinner bundle — $350. The pair an apprentice actually needs.
  • Left-handed scissor and thinner bundle — $350. The same price. Not a surcharge, not a special order, and not a right-handed scissor with the handles moved — a true left-handed build.
  • Scissor alone $250. Thinner alone $250.

The left-handed one is the part worth pausing on. Left-handed apprentices are a standing problem on a training floor: kits often do not include a true left-handed scissor, so the student learns on the wrong tool and builds a habit that takes years to unlearn. Ours is stocked in every size, at the same price, all the time.

We make the scissors, not the whole kit

A student kit is thirty-odd items — combs, clips, a cape, brushes, a case. We do not make those and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we are offering is to be the scissor component inside the kit you already assemble. If you have a kit supplier you are happy with, that is not a problem to solve; it is the person we would work alongside.

What we would need to agree

Institutions need certainty before they will put a supplier on an order form, and rightly so. The things worth putting on the table in a first conversation:

  • A per-student price held for the academic year, so your published kit cost does not move.
  • Supply against your intake dates, not against our convenience.
  • A clear path when a student damages a scissor mid-course.
  • Our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, in writing.
  • ABN, invoicing terms, and a named person who answers the phone.

None of that is boilerplate we would send you. It is the list we would work through with you.

We are probably already in your town

ShearGenius runs a mobile sharpening service across Victoria and Tasmania, plus Mount Gambier and Millicent. Matt and Aaron are on the road most weeks, in the same regional centres the TAFEs are in. If your campus is on a run, meeting in person costs nothing but a morning that is already being spent nearby — and a training floor's own scissors are worth looking at while we are there.

Start the conversation

Email sales@sheargenius.com.au with your institution, the qualifications you deliver, roughly how many students you take a year and when your intakes fall. If it is easier to talk it through, say so and we will call you.

We would rather have one honest conversation about whether this fits than send you a brochure.
