How to Tell a Scissor Maker From a Scissor Marketer — Five Questions

Five questions. Two minutes. Works on any brand, in any store, on any website — including ours. Verified 21 August 2026.

A maker can tell you the exact steel alloy in your scissor, the hardness of your specific pair, the edge geometry and why it suits your cutting — and the person answering is the person who built, inspected or sharpens the tool. A marketer sells you a founding date, a star rating and a colour range, and can't answer a single technical question without reading you the same product page you're already looking at. Before you spend $300–$900, ask the five questions below. If the seller fails two or more, you're buying a logo.

Why this matters more than the brand name

The Australian scissor market is full of logos that sound Japanese and stories that sound like heritage. Some brands on the shelf today were registered as business names by their current owners less than seven years ago — you can check any of them yourself on the Australian Business Register (abr.business.gov.au) in about ninety seconds. None of that is illegal. Marketing companies are allowed to sell scissors. But when your $599 scissor needs warranty work, the question is whether you're talking to the person who made it — or the person who bought the name.

Here are the five questions that separate the two.

Question 1 — “Which steel alloy is in this exact pair?”

A maker answers with a name, stated per model — because an honest seller tells you what's in the pair you're holding, not one blanket claim across a whole range at different price points. On our shelves that answer is Japanese Cobalt Alloy on most models and ATS-314 on the top end, written on every product page.

A marketer answers with a vibe: “premium Japanese steel”, “high-quality Japanese stainless”. Those phrases appear on genuine forged steel and on cast metal with a sticker — they are engineered to be unverifiable. “Japanese steel” is the most abused label in the trade.

Follow-up that settles it: “Put the steel and the hardness in writing for this exact pair.” A maker answers in one line. A marketer will show you a lifestyle photo instead.

Question 2 — “What hardness is this pair?”

Hardness — the Rockwell C figure — is where heat treatment meets your edge life. Too soft and the edge folds within weeks; too hard and it chips on the first drop. The working range for professional scissors is roughly 56–62 HRC depending on the alloy and the geometry.

A maker states the figure for your model and can tell you how they know it. A marketer either publishes no figure at all, or one blanket range stretched across an entire catalogue. If nobody can tell you what your pair runs, nobody measured anything.

Question 3 — “Describe the edge geometry. Is it cast, stamped, or machined?”

This is the question that ends most sales calls, because it's where the money went.

  • Cast steel is poured into a mould: porous, brittle, chips easily, won't hold a fine edge.
  • Stamped blades are punched from sheet: not hollow-ground, so they drag and dull fast.
  • Forged and machined — a forged blank, machined to a hollow-ground convex edge — is the geometry that glides: the blades touch only along a hairline behind the pivot and at the tips, so the scissor closes with almost no drag.

A maker explains this eagerly, because it's the entire reason their scissor costs what it does — machining is slow and subtractive, a few pairs an hour versus a stamping press doing hundreds a minute. Question 4 — “Who sharpens it, and what does the warranty really say about that?”

Every scissor needs sharpening. That's not a defect — it's the lifecycle of the tool. So read the warranty's fine print on sharpening before you buy, and ask three things:

  • Is sharpening covered, or simply not included? Many policies quietly leave it out.
  • What happens if an outside sharpener damages the scissor? Excluding that damage is standard — our warranty excludes it too, and we'll say so to your face rather than bury it.
  • Who does the brand actually expect to sharpen your scissor? If the honest answer is “post it to somebody”, your warranty and your maintenance live in different hands — and when something goes wrong, each can blame the other.

A maker closes that gap structurally: the maker is the sharpener. Question 5 — “Who am I actually talking to?”

The simplest question, and the one no marketer can fake.

The honest disclaimer

This test is brand-neutral by design. There are marketing brands selling decent factory scissors, and we say so — if all you need is a $200 pair in rose gold with Afterpay, some of them will serve you fine. What they can't sell you is a named steel with a per-model hardness, a machined convex edge they can explain, and a maker on the phone who'll also be the one sharpening it. Decide what you're paying for, then pay for it on purpose.

The number alone means nothing without correct heat treatment — two scissors at the same hardness can cut completely differently. What is the difference between forged and cast scissors?

Cast scissors are poured into moulds — the steel is porous and brittle, chips easily, and won't hold a fine edge. Forged blanks are compressed and grain-aligned, then machined to a hollow-ground convex edge, so they're denser, hold an edge far longer, and flex rather than snap when dropped. Casting and stamping only pay off at massive volume; machining costs the same on pair 10,000 as pair one — which is why precision scissors are machined and cheap ones aren't.

Does getting scissors sharpened void the warranty?

Read each brand's policy, because treatment varies — and be fair about what's standard: almost every scissor warranty, including ShearGenius's, excludes damage caused by an outside sharpener. Some policies also don't include sharpening as a covered service at all.
