Hairdressing Scissor Sharpening Melbourne: A Complete Guide

Melbourne has more salons per capita than almost any city in the southern hemisphere and more "scissor sharpening" service operators than it really needs. Most of them should not be touching a premium Japanese scissor. This is the guide I wish every Melbourne hairdresser had before they handed over a $900 pair of shears to a man with a bench grinder at Queen Vic Market.
What Proper Scissor Sharpening Actually Is
A true convex hairdressing scissor cannot be sharpened on a flat grinder, a belt sander, or a home stone kit. The hollow-ground Japanese edge at 20-30° has to be restored by hand on calibrated Japanese water stones by someone who understands the geometry. If your sharpener is running the blade across a powered wheel, they are destroying the convex and converting your scissor into a bevel-edged tool for life. See why professional sharpening beats DIY.
ShearGenius Melbourne Pricing
- $70 per scissor for ShearGenius hairdressing and barber scissors.
- $80 per scissor for all other brands (Japanese, European, any origin).
- $70 per scissor for texturisers and thinners.
- No call-out fee on bookings of three or more scissors.
- Same-day turnaround on the day of visit.
Compare with the Melbourne market's average of $95-$140 per scissor plus upcharges for "premium steel", "convex regrind" or "pivot service". See the 2026 sharpening cost report.
How It Works
- Book a mobile visit. We run regular Melbourne routes — CBD, inner-north, inner-east, bayside and out to Werribee and Williamstown. Three or more scissors in one salon and we come to you.
- Or post them in. Flat-rate mail-in service with insured return post, same-day turnaround on arrival.
- Full inspection first. Tension, pivot wear, edge, handle, screw. We tell you if a scissor is not worth sharpening before we start.
- True convex regrind on Japanese water stones. Hand-finished, 20-22° edge restored, mirror-polished ride line.
- Pivot service. Cleaned, lubricated, drop-test adjusted to your preference.
- Oiled, test cut, back in your hand.
What Melbourne Sharpening Services Do Wrong
- Flat grinding. Converts convex to bevel. Permanent.
- Belt sanding. Overheats the steel, ruins the temper, creates a soft edge that will not hold.
- "Touching up" with emery paper. Rounds the cutting edge, polishes nothing, does nothing.
- Not adjusting tension. A sharp blade with wrong tension still folds hair.
- Not testing on hair. A test cut is the only way to verify the work.
- Upcharging by brand. Flat pricing is the only honest pricing.
Melbourne Mobile Territory
Our Melbourne routes cover the CBD and every inner ring, plus Melton, Werribee, Williamstown, Geelong and Ballarat. If you are further out, mail-in is often faster anyway — same-day turnaround on arrival with insured return post.
Mobile sharpening alone won't find you a stylist — the Melbourne salon directory on findme.hair covers that side of the city for free, hair only.
