The most common complaint I hear, at my own bench and across the international sharpening communities I'm part of, is: "I just got these sharpened and they're already blunt." Nine times out of ten it's not the sharpening. It's the steel.
Sharpening restores an edge. It cannot fix bad steel.
I grind a fresh convex edge on Japanese water stones and reset tension. On a quality scissor — forged, named-grade steel at 56-62 HRC — that edge holds 6-12 months of full-time cutting. On cheap generic stainless, I can put a beautiful edge on it and it folds within a fortnight. The steel is too soft to hold the set. No sharpener on earth can fix that, because the problem is the metal, not the edge.
What "holding the set" means
"The set" is the relationship between the two blades and the pivot tension. A good scissor holds it cut after cut for months. A cheap scissor loses it fast — blades separate or grab, hair folds instead of cutting, and you over-tighten the screw to compensate (wearing it out faster). This is the most-discussed failure in sharpening circles worldwide, and it always traces to soft steel and poor heat treatment.
What the international sharpening community reports
I won't print a blacklist — brands change and that's not my place. But the consistent report across professional sharpening groups worldwide is that the mass-marketed "value" brands — the ones sold on big marketing budgets and Japanese-sounding names — come back bluntest, fastest. Sharpeners dislike working on them not from snobbery but because the customer is disappointed no matter how good the sharpening is. The steel won't reward the work.
