Top End Hairdressing Scissors — Five Star

The Best Hairdressing Scissors in Australia — Matt's Five-Star Forged Range

This is the top of the range. Twelve scissors, every one hand-finished on the bench by Matt Grumley — Australian scissorsmith — at our Lake Wendouree, Victoria workshop, tensioned by hand, edge-ground on Japanese water stones to a true convex finish. Forged from Hitachi ATS-314 cobalt-molybdenum (Matt's Forged Ultimate alloy, 60–62 HRC) with partner factories overseas. These are the scissors Matt would buy if he were a working stylist today.

Why these scissors carry Matt's five-star rating

Matt grades every scissor in the ShearGenius range on a five-point scale built around four factors: steel quality, edge geometry, handle ergonomics, and longevity. Only twelve scissors carry the full five stars: Prodigy, Diamond, Apex, Elite, Cosmos, Vixens, Dracula 10, plus the matched texturisers from the same five-star lines. Every one of them is forged from named Hitachi ATS-314, ships with a hand-finished convex edge from Matt's bench, and is built to outlast 15 years of full-time salon work.

What "Forged ATS-314 Ultimate" actually means

Hitachi ATS-314 is the cobalt-molybdenum premium alloy from Hitachi Metals — about 7% cobalt content, 14.5% chromium, plus molybdenum and tungsten micro-alloying. It sits at 60–62 HRC on the Rockwell hardness scale and holds a knife-grade convex edge through a year or more of full-time professional cutting between sharpenings. The "Forged" part is what separates Ultimate from cheaper ATS-314 scissors — the steel is forge-hammered (not pressed), aligning the grain along the blade and dramatically improving edge longevity.

Frequently asked questions about premium hairdressing scissors

Are top-end hairdressing scissors really worth $1,000+?

For full-time professional stylists, yes — a Forged ATS-314 scissor sharpened correctly will last 15+ years of daily salon work. Cost per cut over that lifetime is lower than a $200 scissor replaced every three years. For apprentices and part-timers, start with the three-star range or four-star range.

What's the difference between five-star and four-star ShearGenius scissors?

Steel grade. Five-star = Forged Hitachi ATS-314 Ultimate (60–62 HRC). Four-star = Japanese Cobalt Alloy (56–58 HRC). Both are real Japanese steel — the difference shows up in edge retention (12 months vs 6 months between sharpenings on full-time use) and resharpening rounds (15+ years vs 8–10 years).

Which is the best ShearGenius scissor for a senior stylist?

The Prodigy in 5.5" or 6.0" is Matt's most-recommended scissor for senior stylists doing precision women's cutting. The Diamond is the most-recommended all-rounder. Apex for longer-blade, scissor-over-comb, barber-leaning work.
