Scissor Anatomy — Every Part, and What It Tells You

Almost every fault a scissor develops has a name, and knowing the names makes it much easier to describe what is wrong — to a sharpener, to a supplier, or to yourself before you spend money you did not need to. This is the working vocabulary, written from the bench rather than a catalogue.

The parts, tip to bow

  • Tips (points). Where precision work happens and where damage happens first — a dropped scissor almost always lands on the tips.
  • Blades. One blade moves and one stays still relative to your hand. They are not identical, which is why a scissor cannot simply be flipped for a left-handed cutter.
  • Edge. The cutting line itself. On a convex edge it is a continuous curve, which is what allows slicing and slide cutting; on a bevelled edge it is a flat facet, which cuts but will not slide cleanly.
  • Ride (or hollow). The contact line where the blades meet. Ground slightly hollow behind the edge so the blades touch at one travelling point instead of dragging along their whole length.
  • Joint and pivot. Where the two halves meet and rotate.
  • Tension screw. Sets how firmly the blades press as they pass. The single most misunderstood part of a scissor.
  • Shank. The arm running back from the joint to the handle.
  • Bows (finger rings). What you actually hold. Offset bows sit the thumb lower than the fingers; a crane drops it further again.
  • Tang (finger rest). The hook under the little finger. It steadies the scissor — and on most models it unscrews, so it can be removed or swapped.
  • Bumper (silencer). The small cushion that stops the blades meeting metal-to-metal at the end of the stroke. A consumable — replace it when it wears.

What the parts tell you when something goes wrong

Folding or pushing hair. Nine times out of ten this is tension or the ride, not bluntness. A scissor with a worn ride cannot hold the blades together in one point, so hair slips ahead of the edge.

A clicking or knocking close. Usually a worn bumper. Cheap to fix, and worth fixing before it costs you tension.

Damage at the tips. Almost always a drop. Whether it is saveable depends on how much steel has to come off to make the tips meet again.

Drag through the stroke. Over-tightened tension, or a burr left on the ride by a grinder that did not hollow it correctly.
