ShearGenius vs Global Scissors: Same Money, Different Answers
Global Scissors' $395 cutting scissor is sold on a product page describing “440C Stainless steel” and “High quality Japanese Steel” — while their own Our Story page says the range is made from, verbatim, “typically : 9CR13 Cobalt, 440C surgical grade or VG10” under the heading of “Japanese metals”. 9CR13 is a Chinese GB-standard steel designation. You don't have to take our word for any of that — both quotes are on their website right now, and this page tells you exactly where. The same $395 at ShearGenius buys the Geisha: one named steel (Japanese Cobalt Alloy), one stated hardness (58 HRC), hand-finished and inspected by the maker, fitted to your hand free, and serviced at your salon for a flat $70 across Victoria and Tasmania, plus Mount Gambier and Millicent. Same money. Very different answers.

The contradiction, in their own words
The product page (6-inch cutting scissor, $395, checked 21 August 2026) carries a steel essay about “440C Stainless steel” and calls it “High quality Japanese Steel” — with no hardness figure, no origin of manufacture and no certificate on the listing.
Their Our Story page, same website, same day: “The Japanese metals Global Scissors are made from are typically : 9CR13 Cobalt, 440C surgical grade or VG10.” It also says “Cobalt 9CR13 is a supreme quality stainless steel with hardness reaching HRC 58-60” — credit where due, that's a hardness figure, and more than most import brands publish.
Two problems, and neither is our opinion:
- 9CR13 is not a Japanese steel. The 9Cr family — 9Cr13, its cobalt-bearing variants, 9Cr18MoV — is a Chinese GB-standard designation: designated in China, made in China, used worldwide because it's economical. It can be perfectly serviceable steel. It cannot be a “Japanese metal”.
- “Typically” is not a specification. If the range is “typically” one of three steels, which one is in the $395 pair you're buying — the Chinese-designated 9CR13, the 440C the product page describes, or VG10? The listing doesn't say. At professional-tool money, “one of three” isn't an answer.
What the bench sees
A note from Matt, as the bloke who'll be quoted on it: I've sharpened more than 100,000 scissors since 2007, including plenty from this category of import. Steel announces itself on the stone — how it grinds, how the burr forms, how the edge comes back after three months behind a chair. My bench read of this category has always been consistent with Chinese 9Cr rather than Japanese 440C. That's a sharpener's assessment, not a lab report — but I never needed the lab, because their own Story page lists 9CR13. The lesson isn't about one brand: steel claims are checkable. A named alloy, a stated origin, a measured hardness, in writing, for the exact pair. If a seller can't produce all three, the word “Japanese” is decoration.
The quote that sits oddly beside a lifetime warranty
Also from their product page, verbatim: “Most professional scissors are designed to last a life time but we recommend buying a new pair/set annually.”
Sit with that. A lifetime warranty on the badge — and a recommendation to rebuy every year in the FAQ. A professional scissor is a decade-plus tool when it's built and maintained properly; that's the entire economics of buying well. What Global Scissors genuinely does well
Honesty both ways, as on every page in this series:
- A real owner-operator. Their site says the owner is a barber of nearly 30 years, and the register backs the business: Global Salon Solutions Pty Ltd, a Queensland company with an ABN active since July 2016, “Global Scissors” registered October 2019 (ABN 89 613 080 612). A genuine small business, not a faceless network.
- $10 from every sale to a charity the customer chooses. Genuinely good, and we're happy to say so.
- The package. $395 with a cloth, oil pen and tension tool included is complete and well presented, and entry pricing starts at $249.
- They publish hardness figures on their Story page — 58–60 HRC for their 9CR13 — which is more disclosure than most import brands attempt. It would mean more attached to the specific steel in the specific scissor you're buying.
Our quarrel is narrow and it's stated plainly: a Chinese-designated steel listed as a “Japanese metal”, and a $395 listing that doesn't say which of three steels you're getting.

Whoever you're buying from — them, us, anyone — run the seller through the five questions that tell a scissor maker from a scissor marketer, and start with the steel question: which alloy is in this exact pair, from where, at what measured hardness? A maker answers in one line. When the marketing says Japanese, the description says 440C and the fine print says “typically 9CR13”, you have your answer about the answer.

Is 9CR steel the same as 440C?
Close cousins, not the same. 9Cr18MoV is often described as China's answer to 440C, and properly heat-treated it's a respectable budget steel. The issue isn't that 9Cr is unusable — it's that a $395 scissor whose product page carries a 440C essay should say which steel is actually in that pair, from which mill, at what measured hardness. “Typically one of three steels” is not a specification.
