Your Scissors Shouldn't Be Guesswork.

Most Scissors Aren't Made for You

Here's what happens every day across Australia. A hairdresser goes online, picks a pair of scissors based on a photo and a price tag, and hopes they'll feel right. Two months later they're dull, they're pulling hair, and there's nobody to call.

That's because most scissors on the market have the same problems:

  • Mass-produced overseas with no quality control on the grind
  • One-size-fits-all designs that don't account for hand size, cutting style, or technique
  • No aftercare — once you buy, you're on your own
  • Sold by people who've never held a pair of shears professionally

You wouldn't buy a car without test-driving it. So why are you buying the tool you use 8 hours a day based on a product photo?

Most of the industry is selling scissors. We're matching tools to people.

Not a Sales Rep. A Scissorsmith.

Matt has been in the hairdressing industry since 1990. He started ShearGenius in 2007 because he was sick of watching stylists get sold scissors that weren't right for them — by people who didn't know the difference.

He's sharpened over 100,000 pairs of scissors. He knows what goes blunt fast, what holds an edge, and what actually feels right in a working hairdresser's hand. When you call ShearGenius, you're not talking to a call centre. You're talking to someone who does this every day.

"I've seen what works — and I've seen what gets thrown in a drawer after 3 weeks."

We're Not a Catalogue. We're Your Scissor People.

There's no shortage of places to buy hairdressing scissors online. The difference is what happens before, during, and after the sale.

Australian-Based Support

You're not dealing with an overseas warehouse. We're here in Australia. Call us, message us, we'll actually pick up. No ticket numbers. No 3-day wait for a reply.

Real Expertise, Not Scripts

We've been sharpening and selling scissors since 2007. We know what works for texturising, what works for barbering, and what works for someone who's just out of their apprenticeship. We'll tell you straight.

Matched to You

We don't ask what you want. We ask how you cut — then tell you what actually works. Hand size, technique, workload. If something isn't right, we fix it. That's what a specialist does.

Ongoing Sharpening Service

Scissors aren't a set-and-forget purchase. They need maintenance. We offer professional sharpening so your scissors perform the way they did on day one. Every time.

Different Stylists Need Different Scissors

This is the part most online stores skip. They show you 30 scissors and leave you to figure it out. We don't work like that. Here's what actually matters when choosing professional hairdressing scissors:

Cutting Scissors

Your everyday workhorse. The blade length, handle offset, and edge type all need to match how you cut. A slide cutter needs a different edge to someone who does blunt cuts all day.

Thinning & Texturising

Tooth count changes everything. Too few teeth and you're removing too much. Too many and you're barely doing anything. We'll help you pick based on the results you're after.

Barber Scissors

Barber work is different — heavier use, different grip, different hair types. You need scissors built for that workload, not a salon pair with a different label on it.

Left-Handed

A proper left-handed scissor isn't a mirror of a right-handed one. The blade is reversed so you can see your cutting line. If you've been using right-handed scissors and compensating, you're working harder than you need to.

Apprentice

Starting out? You don't need the most expensive pair. You need something reliable that teaches you good habits — not something so cheap it makes you think all scissors feel bad.

Not sure where you fit? That's exactly what the consultation is for. We'll work it out with you.

Or start with a free fitting — tell me how you cut and I'll tell you what I'd hand you at the bench. I diagnose first, recommend second. Never the other way round.

The Professional Range, by the Job It Does

Every scissor below is a professional tool. They differ by steel, hardness, blade length and handle — not by how far along your career you are. Find the row that matches your work.

  • Young Genius — $250. Japanese Cobalt Alloy, 58 HRC. The lowest price of entry in the range, and a genuine professional tool.
  • Geisha — $395, 5.0–6.0". Cobalt Alloy, 58 HRC. The all-rounder most stylists settle on.
  • Jada — $400, 5.5–7.0". Cobalt Alloy, 58 HRC, the widest size run in the Cobalt line.
  • Elite — $495, 5.5". Hitachi ATS-314, 58–60 HRC.
  • Swivel — $495. Cobalt Alloy, 58 HRC, with a rotating thumb ring. May suit stylists who find a fixed thumb position restrictive.
  • Vixens — $595, 5.0–5.5". ATS-314, 58–60 HRC, short blades for close detail.
  • Apex — $695, 5.5–6.5". ATS-314, 58–60 HRC across three lengths.
  • Diamond — $695, 5.7–6.2". ATS-314, 58–60 HRC, ground for detail and slice work.
  • Cosmos — $695, 6.0". ATS-314, 58–60 HRC. Crane — the Cosmos for stylists who prefer a steeper handle angle.
  • Prodigy — $795, 5.7–7.0". Forged ATS-314, 60–62 HRC, the highest hardness we publish.

Barber and longer-blade work: the Firebird ($380, 5.5–6.5"), Emperor ($390, 6.0–7.0") and Phoenix 7" ($390), all Cobalt Alloy at 58 HRC.

Left-handed, built left from the start: the Geisha Left-Handed ($395) and Young Genius Left-Handed ($250).

Thinning, texturising and channelling: the 30-tooth Geisha Thinner, the 26-tooth Prodigy Texturiser, and the Dracula 10 channeller.

Every scissor carries the ShearGenius Lifetime Manufacturing Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship — not ordinary edge wear, sharpening or accidental damage — and can be resharpened for as long as there is steel to work with.

A Proper Consultation. Not a Sales Pitch.

Tell us what you need. We'll tell you what works. If we don't have the right scissors for you, we'll say so.

  • One-on-one scissor consultation with a real scissorsmith
  • Recommendation based on your cutting style, not our margins
  • Ongoing sharpening service to keep your scissors performing
  • Flexible payments with SlicePay — no fuss
  • Fast Australian shipping — no waiting weeks from overseas

Most consultations take 5-10 minutes. You'll know exactly what you need by the end of it.

Talk to a Scissorsmith (10 Mins)

No obligation. No pressure. Just straight talk about scissors.

And every scissor we sell carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Forged in Japan, hand-finished at my bench in Lake Wendouree — if something's ever not right, we make it right. That's what buying from your scissorsmith means: you're not buying a pair, you're getting someone in your corner for the rest of your career.

Before You Reach Out

How does the consultation work?

Get in touch via the contact page, phone, or live chat. We'll ask about your cutting style, what you're using now, and what's not working. Then we'll recommend the right scissors for you. Takes about 10 minutes.

Do I have to buy after the consultation?

No. If the consultation helps and you don't buy, that's fine. We'd rather you get the right scissors — even if that means waiting until you're ready.

What brands do you sell?

ShearGenius is our own brand. We design and source our scissors directly — no middlemen. That means better quality control and better prices than going through a distributor.

How much do professional hairdressing scissors cost?

Depends on what you need. We have scissors for apprentices through to premium lines for experienced stylists. We also offer SlicePay so you can spread the cost without interest.

Do you ship Australia-wide?

Yes. Fast shipping across Australia. Most orders are dispatched the same day or next business day.

Can you sharpen scissors I bought elsewhere?

Yes. We sharpen all brands, not just our own. If you've got a pair that's gone dull, catch us on the next run through your area and we'll sharpen them at your salon.

It's a paid service — $70 to $80 a scissor — and I'll tell you upfront if a pair isn't worth sharpening. Some aren't, and you deserve to hear that before you spend the money.

Stop wasting money on the wrong scissors.
