Mail-In Scissor Sharpening Australia

TL;DR: ShearGenius offers Australia-wide mail-in scissor sharpening for hairdressers and barbers outside our VIC/SA/TAS mobile zones. Pack your scissors, ship them tracked, and we'll sharpen, clean, oil and return them insured — typically 3-5 business days door-to-door. Flat pricing: $70 per pair for ShearGenius brand scissors, $80 per pair for all other brands. No hidden fees. Backed by a 30-day guarantee and 100,000+ scissors sharpened since 2007. Book mail-in sharpening online.

Not every salon is on our mobile route. If you're cutting in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, the Gold Coast, Cairns, Alice Springs or any of the hundreds of regional towns we don't drive through, mail-in is the next best thing — and in many cases, it's better than whatever local sharpener you'd otherwise use. You get the same workshop, the same hands, the same convex wheels and the same 30-day guarantee as a customer standing next to the van in Ballarat.

Who Mail-In Sharpening Is For

  • Remote and regional salons — anywhere outside Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
  • FIFO barbers who travel between mine sites and don't have time to drop off locally.
  • Country stylists in NSW, QLD, WA and NT towns where the only "sharpener" is the bloke at the Sunday market.
  • Mobile and home-based hairdressers who'd rather post a scissor than drive an hour each way.
  • Salons trialling our service before booking a full mobile visit.

How Mail-In Sharpening Works

  1. Book online. Tell us how many scissors and what types — hairdressing, barber, thinning, etc. We'll confirm pricing and email you a packing checklist with our workshop address.
  2. Package safely. Bubble-wrap each scissor, fit a blade guard if you have one, and pack into a rigid box. (Full packing instructions below.)
  3. Ship tracked. Use Australia Post Express, StarTrack or Sendle with tracking. We strongly recommend Express Post for anything from a capital city — it's typically next-business-day to our workshop.
  4. We sharpen within promptly after arrival. Inspection, convex grind, tension reset, blade-ride correction, ultrasonic clean, oil and a final test cut on hair.
  5. Insured return. Your scissors go back tracked and insured, usually shipped the same day they're finished. You get the tracking number by email.
  6. Test and review. Every customer is asked to test on hair within 30 days. Anything not perfect, we re-do free.

How to Package Scissors Safely

Most damage to mail-in scissors happens in the post, not on the bench. A scissor in a flimsy padded envelope will arrive bent, chipped or sticking through the paper. Five minutes of packing protects you.

  • Closed and locked. Close every scissor before packing. If it has a finger-rest screw, ensure it's tight.
  • Blade guard or tape. Use the original blade guard if you have it, or wrap the blade tip in a folded card and a strip of masking tape. Never use sticky tape directly on the polished edge.
  • Bubble wrap each scissor individually. Two full wraps minimum. Don't bundle bare scissors — they'll chip each other.
  • Rigid box. Use a small cardboard box, not a satchel. Australia Post small parcel boxes are perfect.
  • Pad the void. Newspaper, paper offcuts or more bubble wrap. Nothing should rattle when you shake the box.
  • Include a note. Your name, salon, contact number and the booking reference. We match every parcel to the booking on arrival.
  • No customs forms. All shipments are domestic — no customs paperwork needed.

Recommended Couriers

Courier Service Tracking Best For
Australia Post Express Post Yes Capital cities, fastest option
Australia Post Parcel Post Yes Budget option, slightly slower
StarTrack Premium Yes Regional and bulk salon shipments
Sendle Standard Yes Home-based stylists, carbon-neutral

Whichever courier you use, always send tracked. Untracked mail is not insurable and we cannot accept liability for lost untracked parcels.

Returns and Guarantee

Every mail-in job is covered by our standard 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If your scissor isn't cutting cleanly within 30 days — and assuming it hasn't been dropped or abused since you got it back — we'll re-sharpen it free and cover return postage. Send it back the same way you sent it the first time, with a note explaining the issue. Re-do work is prioritised on the bench and usually back to you inside the same week.

If your scissor arrives at our workshop visibly damaged in transit, we'll photograph it and contact you immediately so you can lodge a courier claim. We never refuse a job because of courier damage — we'll quote any extra repair work and let you decide whether to proceed.

FAQs

Is mail-in scissor sharpening safe?

Yes, when packaged correctly. Tens of thousands of scissors are shipped successfully every year between Australian salons and sharpeners. Use a rigid box, bubble wrap, blade guards and a tracked courier and your scissors will arrive in the same condition they left.

How do I pack my scissors?

Close each scissor, cover the blade tips with a guard or folded card, wrap individually in bubble wrap, and pack into a rigid box with padding. Never send bare scissors in a padded envelope. Full instructions are in the section above.

How much does mail-in sharpening cost?

Flat pricing: $70 per pair for ShearGenius brand scissors and $80 per pair for all other brands. No hidden fees, no variable ranges. Return shipping is charged at courier cost, typically $15-$40 depending on your location.

How long does it take?

3-5 business days door-to-door for capital cities, 5-7 days for regional and remote locations. Bench time is always kept short from arrival — the rest is courier transit.

Do you sharpen scissors from WA, NT, QLD and NSW?

Yes — every state and territory in Australia. WA and NT customers should allow an extra 1-2 days for return transit and we recommend Express Post both ways.

What if my scissor arrives damaged?

We'll photograph the damage on arrival and contact you immediately. You can then lodge a claim with the courier. We'll still complete the sharpening and quote any extra repair work needed before proceeding.

Can I send multiple scissors in one parcel?

Yes — and we encourage it. Bulk discounts apply from 5 scissors and the per-scissor shipping cost drops sharply when you batch them. Salons commonly send 10-20 scissors at a time.

Do you sharpen brands you don't sell?

Yes. We sharpen every major brand — Joewell, Yasaka, Mizutani, Kasho, Hikari, Kamisori, Matakki, Jaguar, Tondeo, Wahl, Andis, Geib, Kenchii and many more. If your scissor is convex Japanese steel, it goes on the same wheel.
