Professional Hair Scissors: What Actually Makes a Good Pair
Share
After 35 years cutting hair and sharpening thousands of hair scissors, I have handled just about every brand, steel type, and price point on the market. The question I get asked most — from apprentices and experienced stylists alike — is simple: what actually makes a good pair of hair scissors?
The answer is not just about how much you spend. Some $800 hair scissors are genuinely worth the investment. Some are overpriced marketing. And some affordable pairs will serve you well for years if you know what to look for. Here is what actually matters.
The Steel Is Everything
The single most important factor in any pair of professional hair scissors is the steel they are made from. It determines how sharp the blade gets, how long it stays sharp, and how it feels in your hand over a full day of cutting.
There are three main grades you will encounter in professional hair scissors:
- Japanese Cobalt Alloy (56-58 HRC) — A forgiving, smooth-cutting steel ideal for apprentices and stylists who prefer a softer feel. Easier to sharpen and more resistant to accidental drops.
- Japanese ATS-314 (58-60 HRC) — The workhorse of professional hair scissors. A cobalt-molybdenum alloy that holds a razor edge significantly longer than standard grades.
- Japanese Forged ATS-314 Ultimate Alloy (60-62 HRC) — The top tier. Forged rather than cast, these blades achieve exceptional hardness and edge retention.

Blade Type: Convex vs Bevelled Edge
Convex edge blades are ground to a razor-sharp, curved edge — similar to a Japanese katana. They enable effortless slide cutting, point cutting, and precision work. Most high-end hair scissors use convex edges because they produce the cleanest cut with the least effort.
Bevelled edge blades have a flat, angled edge similar to kitchen knives. They are more durable and forgiving, which makes them popular with students. However, they cannot match the silky cutting feel of a convex blade.

Handle Design: Why It Matters More Than You Think
Your hair scissors are in your hand for 6-10 hours a day. The handle design directly affects your comfort, fatigue levels, and long-term wrist health:
- Offset Ergonomic — The thumb blade is shorter, allowing a more natural, relaxed hand position. Most popular choice for hairdressers.
- Crane — An extreme offset design providing maximum wrist relief. Recommended for stylists who experience RSI.
- Even (Opposing) — Both blades the same length with symmetrical handles. Traditional but can cause fatigue over time.
We have written an in-depth guide to hairdressing scissor handle types.
Size: Getting It Right
- 5.0-5.5 inches — Ideal for precision work, point cutting, and smaller hands
- 5.5-6.0 inches — The most versatile range for general hairdressing
- 6.0-6.5 inches — Popular with barbers and over-comb work
- 6.5-7.0 inches — Barber territory, scissor-over-comb technique

What to Avoid When Buying Hair Scissors
- Buying on price alone. The cheapest hair scissors use inferior steel that dulls within weeks. Read the true cost of cheap hairdressing scissors.
- Ignoring the tension system. We use dual bearing flat on all ShearGenius models for smooth, consistent cutting.
- Skipping professional sharpening. Even the best hair scissors need regular sharpening. We offer mobile sharpening and mail-in sharpening Australia-wide.
- Not maintaining them properly. Oiling your scissors daily extends their life dramatically.
- Buying from brands with no scissorsmith behind them. Many Australian scissor brands are run by marketers who have never cut hair or sharpened a blade.
